The Floor Calculator calculates how much flooring you need for a room and what it will cost.
It multiplies the room length by its width to get the floor area, adds a waste allowance to get the amount to order, and divides by the coverage per box to get the number of boxes. The cost mode adds material (with waste), installation labor, removal of the old floor and extras. It works for hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile or any flooring sold by area; specialized flooring calculators are listed below the tool.
Floor Calculator
Floor area, flooring with waste, boxes to buy and total cost — for hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile or carpet.
Formula
- Floor area: A = L × W
- Flooring to order: A × (1 + waste %)
- Boxes: ⌈A × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per box⌉
- Total cost: A × (material price × (1 + waste %) + labor + removal) + extras
Where L and W are the room length and width.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Measure the room and multiply length by width.
Step 2: Add waste for cuts, then divide by the box coverage printed on the carton and round up.
Step 3: For cost, price the material you buy (including waste) and the labor on the actual floor area.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Coverage per box | Square feet (or m²) in one carton, from the label |
| Waste allowance | Extra for cuts, pattern and mistakes |
| Material price, labor, removal | Prices per ft² or m² (examples by default) |
| Extras | Underlayment, trim, transitions, delivery |
Example Calculation
Given: room 15 × 12 ft, 20 ft² per box, 10% waste
Area: 180 ft²; to order: 198 ft²
Boxes: 198 ÷ 20 = 9.9 → 10 boxes
Cost
With $4/ft² material and $3/ft² labor (example prices): 180 × (4 × 1.1 + 3) = $1,332 ($792 material, $540 labor)
Common Area Conversion Table
| Unit | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 m² | 10.7639 ft² |
| 1 yd² | 9 ft² |
Material Estimation Notes
Floor area is not the same as the amount to buy. Boxes come in fixed sizes, cut pieces at walls are often too short to reuse, and some flooring needs underlayment, transitions and trim. For odd-shaped rooms, measure in rectangles and add them, or use the Floor Area Calculator.
Waste Factor Considerations
Waste depends on the flooring type, plank or tile size, layout pattern (straight, diagonal, herringbone) and the number of corners and obstacles. Your flooring retailer or installer can recommend an allowance for your product.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much flooring do I need?
Room length × width, plus a waste allowance.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Area with waste ÷ square feet per box, rounded up.
How do I calculate flooring cost?
Area × (material price with waste + labor), plus extras.
Should I buy extra flooring?
Yes — for cuts, mistakes and future repairs from the same production lot.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, calculate each and add them.
