The Vinyl Floor Calculator calculates how much vinyl flooring to buy for a room — boxes of luxury vinyl plank or tile, or a length of sheet vinyl off the roll.
For planks and tiles, it adds waste to the floor area and divides by the box coverage. For sheet vinyl, it counts how many roll-width strips cover the room and adds a 6 in trimming allowance to the length of each, then shows the square yards to buy.

Sheet vinyl:
- Strips: ⌈W ÷ roll width⌉
- Length to cut: strips × (L + 0.5 ft)
- Area to buy: length to cut × roll width
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: For planks, find the area, add waste and divide by the carton coverage.
Step 2: For sheet goods, work out how many strips of roll width are needed across the room.
Step 3: Multiply by the room length plus a trim allowance, and convert to square yards.

Vinyl plank
Given: 15 × 12 ft room, 24 ft² per box, 10% waste
Result: 198 ÷ 24 = 8.25 → 9 boxes
Sheet vinyl
Given: same room, 12 ft roll
Strips: 12 ÷ 12 = 1; length: 15 + 0.5 = 15.5 ft
Result: 15.5 × 12 = 186 ft² ≈ 20.7 yd²

Material Estimation Notes
- Sheet vinyl rooms wider than the roll need a seam; pattern matching at seams may require extra length.
- Some LVP has attached underlayment; others need a separate pad or moisture barrier — check the product.
- Transitions and trim are separate.
Waste Factor Considerations
Waste depends on plank length, room shape and layout. Sheet vinyl waste comes mainly from trimming and from rooms that don’t match the roll width.
