The Hardwood Floor Calculator calculates how much solid or engineered wood flooring to order for a room.
Box mode multiplies length by width, adds waste and divides by the carton coverage. Board mode divides the area (with waste) by the face area of one board — face width × board length — to count individual boards, and also gives the total linear length.
Hardwood Floor Calculator
Square footage, boxes and number of boards for hardwood or engineered wood flooring, with waste.
Formula
- Boxes: ⌈L × W × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per box⌉
- Boards: ⌈L × W × (1 + waste %) ÷ (face width × board length)⌉
- Linear length: L × W × (1 + waste %) ÷ face width
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Find the floor area and add waste.
Step 2: Divide by the box coverage, or by one board’s face area.
Step 3: Round up to whole boxes or boards.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Coverage per box | From the carton label |
| Board face width | Visible width once installed (excluding the tongue) |
| Board length | Length of each board; random-length products use an average |
Example Calculation
Given: room 15 × 12 ft, 10% waste
Boxes (20 ft² each): 198 ÷ 20 → 10 boxes
Boards (5 in × 48 in, 1.667 ft² each): 198 ÷ 1.667 ≈ 118.8 → 119 boards; linear length ≈ 475 ft
Common Area Conversion Table
| Unit | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 m² | 10.7639 ft² |
| 1 ft² | 144 in² |
Material Estimation Notes
- Many hardwood products come in random lengths; use the box coverage rather than counting boards for those.
- Wood flooring often needs to acclimate in the room before installation — follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Underlayment, moisture barrier, nails or adhesive, and transitions are separate.
Waste Factor Considerations
Waste depends on board length, grade (natural character boards may be culled), room shape and layout pattern. Diagonal and herringbone layouts use noticeably more.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much hardwood flooring do I need?
Room area plus a waste allowance, divided by the carton coverage.
How many boards are in a square foot?
1 ft² ÷ one board’s face area. A 5 × 48 in board covers 1.67 ft².
Should I use face width or total width?
Face width — the tongue is hidden once installed.
Does engineered wood use the same calculation?
Yes.
How much extra hardwood should I buy?
It depends on the layout and product; ask your supplier and keep spares for repairs.
