The Interlocking Floor Mat Calculator calculates how many interlocking foam or rubber mats you need to cover an area, plus border strips for a clean edge.
It counts mats along the length and across the width — each rounded up to whole mats — and multiplies. Border strips run along all four sides, one per mat edge.
Interlocking Floor Mat Calculator
Number of interlocking foam or rubber gym floor mats and border pieces for a room.
Formula
- Mats: ⌈L ÷ mat size⌉ × ⌈W ÷ mat size⌉
- Border strips: 2 × (⌈L ÷ mat size⌉ + ⌈W ÷ mat size⌉)
- Area covered: mats × mat size²
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Work out how many mats fit along each side, rounding up so the whole area is covered.
Step 2: Multiply for the total number of mats.
Step 3: Count the border pieces around the outside edge.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Area length, width | Space you want to cover |
| Mat size | Side of one square mat, e.g. 2 ft (24 in) |
Example Calculation
Given: 12 × 10 ft area, 2 × 2 ft mats
Mats: 6 × 5 = 30
Border strips: 2 × (6 + 5) = 22
Area covered: 30 × 4 = 120 ft²
Common Mat Sizes
| Mat size | Area per mat |
|---|---|
| 2 × 2 ft (24 in) | 4 ft² |
| 1 × 1 ft (12 in) | 1 ft² |
| 1 × 1 m | 1 m² |
The interlocking teeth mean the usable size is slightly less than the outside size on some products; use the covered size from the listing.
Material Estimation Notes
- If the area isn’t a whole number of mats, the calculator rounds up and you trim the last row.
- Border strip lengths vary by brand; some sets include them.
- Choose thickness based on use — heavier training areas typically use thicker rubber.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 2 × 2 mats do I need?
Divide each side by 2 ft, round up, and multiply.
How many mats for a 10 × 10 room?
With 2 ft mats: 5 × 5 = 25 mats.
Do I need border strips?
They give a straight edge and reduce trip hazards on open sides.
Can I cut interlocking mats?
Foam cuts easily with a utility knife; rubber needs a sharper blade.
Are interlocking mats good for garages?
Some are designed for it; check the product’s rating for vehicle use.
