The Garage Floor Tile Calculator calculates how many interlocking garage floor tiles you need and how many edge ramps to finish open sides such as the door.
It divides the garage floor area by the area of one tile, adds a small allowance for cuts, and counts ramps along any open edge by dividing its length by the tile size.
Garage Floor Tile Calculator
Interlocking garage floor tiles and edge ramps for a one-, two- or three-car garage.
Formula
- Tiles: ⌈L × W ÷ tile area × (1 + extra %)⌉
- Edge ramps: ⌈open edge length ÷ tile size⌉
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Measure the garage floor.
Step 2: Divide by the tile area and add extra for cutting around walls and posts.
Step 3: Measure the open edges that need ramps (usually the door edge) and divide by the tile length.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Garage length, width | Floor dimensions to cover |
| Tile size | Side of one square tile, e.g. 12 in |
| Open edges | Length of edges where you step or drive on (need ramps) |
Example Calculation
Given: garage 22 × 20 ft, 12 in tiles, 20 ft of door edge, 5% extra
Tiles: 440 × 1.05 = 462 tiles
Ramps: 20 ÷ 1 = 20
Common Area Conversion Table
| Unit | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 12 × 12 in tile | 1 ft² |
| 1 m² | 10.7639 ft² |
Material Estimation Notes
- Tile sizes differ by brand; enter the actual installed size.
- Corner ramp pieces (where two ramped edges meet) and color borders are ordered separately by some brands.
- Check whether your tiles are designed for vehicle loads and hot-tire conditions.
Waste Factor Considerations
Cuts around walls, steps, drains and posts use extra tiles. Garages with many obstacles need a larger allowance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many garage floor tiles do I need?
Floor area ÷ tile area, plus extra for cuts.
How many tiles for a two-car garage?
It depends on the size; a 22 × 20 ft garage needs 440 one-foot tiles before extra.
Do I need edge ramps?
On open edges where people walk or drive onto the tiles, such as the door.
Can I cut interlocking tiles?
Most can be cut to fit; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Should I add a pattern?
Plan it on graph paper and count each color separately.
