The Floor Framing Calculator calculates the framing materials for a floor or deck platform: joists, rim (band) joists, blocking and subfloor sheets.
Joists = floor width ÷ spacing + 1. The rim runs along both ends of the joists, so its length is twice the floor width. Blocking adds one piece between each pair of joists for a mid-span row, and subfloor sheets cover the floor area with a small allowance.
Floor Framing Calculator
Joists, rim joists, blocking and subfloor sheets for framing a floor or deck.
Formula
- Joists: ⌈W ÷ spacing⌉ + 1
- Rim / band joist: 2 × W
- Blocking (one row): ⌈W ÷ spacing⌉
- Subfloor sheets: ⌈S × W ÷ 32 ft² × 1.05⌉
Where W = floor width measured across the joists and S = joist span (length of each joist).
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Count joists across the floor width at your spacing, including one at each end.
Step 2: Add rim joists on both sides that cap the joist ends.
Step 3: Count blocking pieces and subfloor sheets.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Joist span | Length of each joist between supports |
| Floor width | Dimension across the joists |
| Joist spacing | On-center distance |
| Mid-span blocking | Whether to add one row of blocking |
Example Calculation
Given: joists span 12 ft, floor 20 ft wide, 16 in o.c., one row of blocking
Joists: 240 ÷ 16 = 15, + 1 = 16
Rim: 2 × 20 = 40 ft
Blocking: 15 pieces
Subfloor: 240 ft² ÷ 32 × 1.05 ≈ 7.9 → 8 sheets
Material Estimation Notes
- Joist size depends on the span and loads — check it with the Floor Joist Span Calculator or your code’s span tables.
- Doubled joists under walls, headers around stair openings, beams, posts and hangers are extra.
- Blocking requirements vary; some designs use bridging or none at all.
Waste Factor Considerations
Lumber is sold in fixed lengths, so rim joists and blocking may create offcuts. Add a few spare boards for defects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many floor joists do I need?
Floor width ÷ spacing + 1, rounded up.
How many joists for a 20 ft floor at 16 in on center?
16 joists.
What is a rim joist?
The board fastened across the ends of the joists around the perimeter.
Do floor joists need blocking?
It depends on the design and code; enter whether you plan a mid-span row.
Can I use this for a deck?
Yes for the joist count; deck boards replace the subfloor sheets.
