The Wall Molding Calculator plans picture-frame (box) molding by working out how wide each box must be to fit evenly across your wall, and how much molding you need in total.
Box width = (wall width − 2 × end margin − gaps between boxes) ÷ number of boxes. A second mode calculates the linear feet of baseboard, chair rail or crown for a room — perimeter minus door openings, plus waste — and the number of trim pieces to buy.
Wall Molding & Trim Calculator
Picture-frame wall molding box sizes and total molding length, or linear feet of trim for a room.
Formula
Picture-frame boxes:
- Box width = (W − 2m − (n − 1)g) ÷ n
- Total molding = 2 × (box width + box height) × number of boxes
Room trim:
- Trim length = (2(L + W) − door widths) × (1 + waste %)
- Pieces = trim length ÷ piece length, rounded up
Where W = wall width, m = margin at each end, g = gap between boxes, n = boxes across.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Subtract the end margins and the gaps between boxes from the wall width.
Step 2: Divide the remaining width equally between the boxes.
Step 3: Add up the four sides of every box (times the number of rows) for the total molding length.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Boxes across | How many boxes in each row |
| Margin at wall ends | Space between the wall corner and the first box |
| Gap between boxes | Space between neighboring boxes |
| Box height, rows | Height of each box and how many rows |
Example Calculation
Picture-frame boxes
Given: wall 144 in wide, 3 boxes, 4 in margins, 4 in gaps, boxes 30 in tall, 1 row
Box width: (144 − 8 − 8) ÷ 3 ≈ 42.67 in
Molding: 2 × (42.67 + 30) × 3 = 436 in
Result: 3 boxes about 42²⁄₃ × 30 in; about 36.3 ft of molding
Baseboard for a room
Given: room 14 × 12 ft, 36 in of door openings, 8 ft pieces, 10% waste
Trim: (52 − 3) × 1.1 = 53.9 ft
Result: 7 pieces of 8 ft
Material Estimation Notes
Each box has four mitered corners, and mitered pieces are slightly longer than the box’s inside size. Buy molding in lengths that let you cut full box sides with little waste, and allow extra for test cuts.
Waste Factor Considerations
Rooms with many outside corners, short runs or complex profiles (such as crown) typically need more allowance. The room-trim mode lets you set your own waste percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate picture frame molding spacing?
Subtract the margins and gaps from the wall width and divide by the number of boxes.
How much molding do I need for box trim?
2 × (width + height) for each box, times the number of boxes.
How much baseboard do I need for a room?
The room perimeter minus doorways, plus waste.
What size should wall molding boxes be?
It’s a design choice; equal margins and gaps usually look balanced. Try different box counts until the width looks right.
Do I measure boxes to the outside of the molding?
Yes — the calculator’s box width and height are outside dimensions.
