The Board and Batten Calculator works out how many vertical battens fit on your wall and the exact gap that spaces them evenly from end to end.
It starts from your target gap, rounds to a whole number of battens n = round((W + gap) ÷ (batten + gap)), then recalculates the exact gap: (W − n × batten) ÷ (n − 1). It also totals the linear feet of batten — verticals plus any horizontal rails — and the number of boards to buy.
Board and Batten Wall Calculator
Number of battens, exact even spacing and total linear feet for a board and batten accent wall.
Formula
- Number of battens (including both ends): n = round((W + g) ÷ (b + g))
- Exact even gap: gap = (W − n × b) ÷ (n − 1)
- Total length: n × H + rails × W
- Boards to buy: total length ÷ board length, rounded up
Where W = wall width, H = batten height, b = batten width, g = target gap.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Estimate how many batten-plus-gap units fit across the wall and round to the nearest whole number.
Step 2: Subtract the width of all battens from the wall width and divide what’s left equally between the gaps.
Step 3: Add up the vertical and horizontal lengths and convert to boards.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Wall width | Width of the accent area, edge to edge |
| Batten height | Length of each vertical batten |
| Batten width | Actual face width of the boards (e.g. a 1×4 is about 3½ in) |
| Target gap | Spacing you would like; the calculator adjusts it to be even |
| Horizontal rails | Top, middle or bottom boards that run across the wall |
Example Calculation
Given: 12 ft wall (144 in), battens 8 ft tall and 3½ in wide, target gap 16 in, one top rail, 8 ft boards
Battens: (144 + 16) ÷ (3.5 + 16) = 8.2 → 8 battens
Exact gap: (144 − 8 × 3.5) ÷ 7 ≈ 16.57 in
Total length: 8 × 8 + 1 × 12 = 76 ft
Result: 8 battens spaced about 16⁹⁄₁₆ in apart; 10 boards of 8 ft
Material Estimation Notes
- Use the board’s actual width, not its nominal size.
- Rails that run the full wall width may need joining if the wall is longer than your boards.
- Nails, adhesive, caulk, filler and paint are separate items.
Waste Factor Considerations
The board count has no extra added. Buy spares for knots, splits, miscuts and outlets — how many depends on the lumber quality and the wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far apart should board and batten be?
It’s a design choice; enter your preferred gap and the calculator finds the nearest spacing that divides the wall evenly.
How do you calculate board and batten spacing?
Gap = (wall width − number of battens × batten width) ÷ (number of battens − 1).
How many battens do I need?
Divide the wall width plus one gap by the batten width plus one gap, and round.
Do I count the battens at each end?
Yes. This calculator places a batten at both edges of the wall.
How much wood do I need for board and batten?
Battens × height, plus the length of any rails, divided by your board length.
