Accent Wall Calculator – Grid Wall & Slat Wall Planner

The Accent Wall Calculator plans two popular DIY feature walls: a grid (box) wall and a slat wall.

For a grid wall, it divides the wall into equal squares after allowing for the width of each trim board: square width = (W − (columns + 1) × trim width) ÷ columns. It then totals the vertical and horizontal trim and estimates boards. For a slat wall, it counts slats from the slat width and gap and totals their length.

Accent Wall Calculator

Plan a grid (square/box) or slat accent wall: square size, number of boards and total trim length.

Formula

Grid wall:

  • Square width = (W − (C + 1) × t) ÷ C
  • Square height = (H − (R + 1) × t) ÷ R
  • Total trim = (C + 1) × H + (R + 1) × W
  • Boards ≈ total trim ÷ board length × 1.10, rounded up

Slat wall:

  • Slats = (W + gap) ÷ (slat width + gap), rounded down
  • Total slat length = slats × H

Where W = wall width, H = height, C = columns, R = rows, t = trim width.

How the Calculation Works

Step 1: Subtract the width of every vertical (or horizontal) trim board from the wall size.

Step 2: Divide the remaining space by the number of columns (or rows) to get equal openings.

Step 3: Total the trim lengths and add a 10% allowance for the board count.

Variables Explained

Input Meaning
Columns, rows Number of squares across and down
Trim width Actual width of the boards (e.g. 3½ in for a 1×4)
Slat width, gap Face width of each slat and the space between

Example Calculation

Grid wall

Given: 12 ft × 8 ft, 4 columns, 3 rows, 3½ in trim, 8 ft boards

Square width: (144 − 5 × 3.5) ÷ 4 = 31.625 in

Square height: (96 − 4 × 3.5) ÷ 3 ≈ 27.33 in

Trim: 5 × 8 + 4 × 12 = 88 ft

Result: about 13 boards

Slat wall

Given: 10 ft × 8 ft, 1½ in slats, 1 in gaps

Result: (120 + 1) ÷ 2.5 = 48 slats; 384 ft of slat

Material Estimation Notes

Horizontal trim that spans the full width may need joints if the wall is wider than your boards. Adhesive, nails, caulk, filler and paint are extra.

Waste Factor Considerations

The grid board count includes 10% extra; the slat count does not. Add spares for defects and outlets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a grid accent wall?

Subtract all trim widths from the wall width and height, then divide by the number of squares across and down.

How many boards do I need for an accent wall?

Add all vertical and horizontal lengths, divide by your board length and add extra.

How many slats do I need for a slat wall?

(Wall width + gap) ÷ (slat width + gap), rounded down.

Should grid squares be square?

Not necessarily; adjust rows and columns until the openings look right for your wall.

Do I need trim around the edges?

This layout includes boards at both edges and at the top and bottom.
