Boulder Retaining Wall Calculator – Number of Boulders & Tons of Rock

The Boulder Retaining Wall Calculator estimates how many boulders you need for a rock wall and roughly how much they weigh.

It lays boulders of your average size along the wall (length ÷ size per row) and stacks rows to the wall height (height ÷ size), then estimates each boulder’s weight by treating it as a sphere of that size times the rock density. Real boulders vary, so treat the result as a starting point for ordering.

Boulder Retaining Wall Calculator

Estimate the number of boulders and tons of rock for a boulder (rock) retaining wall.

A rough estimate — real boulders vary in shape. Order extra so you can choose well-fitting stones.

Formula

  • Boulders per row: ⌈L ÷ d⌉
  • Rows: ⌈H ÷ d⌉
  • Boulders: per row × rows
  • Weight: boulders × (πd³ ÷ 6) × density

Where L = wall length, H = wall height including the buried row, d = average boulder size.

How the Calculation Works

Step 1: Count how many average-sized boulders fit along the wall and up its height.

Step 2: Estimate the volume of one boulder as a sphere of diameter d.

Step 3: Multiply by the rock density and the number of boulders, and convert to tons.

Variables Explained

Input Meaning
Wall length, height Size of the wall including any buried row
Average boulder size Typical diameter of the boulders you plan to use
Rock density Weight per cubic foot of the rock type

Example Calculation

Given: wall 20 ft long, 4 ft high, boulders about 2.5 ft across, rock 165 lb/ft³

Per row: 20 ÷ 2.5 = 8; rows: 4 ÷ 2.5 = 1.6 → 2

Boulders: 16

One boulder: π × 2.5³ ÷ 6 ≈ 8.18 ft³ × 165 ≈ 1,350 lb

Result: ≈ 21,600 lb ≈ 10.8 US tons

Material Estimation Notes

  • Boulders are usually sold by the ton. Ask your supplier how many boulders of a given size come in a ton.
  • Order extra so the installer can choose stones that fit well.
  • Base stone and drainage gravel behind the wall are separate — use the Retaining Wall Footing calculator for base gravel.

Engineering Assumptions

This is a rough quantity estimate; a sphere is a simplification of real boulder shapes. Stacked boulder walls holding back significant soil should be designed by a professional, and heavy boulders need suitable equipment to place safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many boulders do I need for a retaining wall?

(Length ÷ boulder size) × (height ÷ boulder size), rounded up.

How much does a boulder weigh?

Roughly the volume of a sphere of its size times the rock density; a 2.5 ft boulder of dense rock can weigh well over half a ton.

How many tons of boulders do I need?

Number of boulders × weight per boulder.

Should the bottom row be buried?

Many builders bury part of the first row for stability; include it in the wall height.

Can I build a boulder wall myself?

Small boulders, perhaps; large ones need machinery and experience.
