The Wall Construction Cost Calculator estimates the cost of building or installing a wall using the pricing your contractor quotes: either per square foot of wall area or per linear foot of wall length.
Per area: total = length × height × price per ft² + extras. Per length: total = length × price per linear foot + extras. It works for partition walls, garden walls, fences, masonry or framed walls — any wall priced by size.
Wall Construction Cost Calculator
Estimate the cost to build or install a wall from its area and a cost per square foot, or per linear foot.
Formula
Per square foot: Total = L × H × price per area + extras
Per linear foot: Total = L × price per length + extras
Where L = wall length, H = wall height, and extras are fixed costs (permits, demolition, finishing).
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Choose how your price is quoted — per area or per length.
Step 2: Multiply the wall size by the rate.
Step 3: Add any one-off extras to get the total.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cost per wall area | All-in price per ft² or m² of wall face |
| Cost per length | All-in price per linear foot or meter |
| Extras | Permits, demolition, electrical, painting, disposal |
The default rates are examples; replace them with local quotes.
Example Calculation
Priced per square foot
Given: wall 20 ft × 8 ft at $25/ft² (example)
Result: 160 ft² × $25 = $4,000
Priced per linear foot
Given: 20 ft at $60 per linear foot (example)
Result: 20 × $60 = $1,200
Converting between the two
A per-linear-foot price already assumes a height. To compare with a per-ft² price, divide the per-foot price by the wall height: $60 ÷ 8 ft = $7.50 per ft².
What Affects Wall Cost
- Wall type: framed partition, block, brick, stone, concrete or glass.
- Height, openings, and whether it is load-bearing.
- Finishes: drywall, plaster, paint, tile or cladding.
- Services running through the wall (electrical, plumbing).
- Permits, structural engineering and demolition.
Material Estimation Notes
For material quantities, use the wall calculators for the specific build type — framing, block, brick, stone or concrete — then price them from your supplier.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you estimate the cost to build a wall?
Multiply the wall area (or length) by the installed rate and add extras.
Should I compare quotes per square foot or per linear foot?
Per square foot is fairer when wall heights differ; per linear foot is common for fences and garden walls.
What is included in an all-in rate?
Ask your contractor — rates may or may not include finishing, electrical or disposal.
How do I estimate a partition wall?
Use the per-square-foot mode with the partition’s height and length.
Can I include demolition?
Yes — add it as an extra.
