Wall Panel Calculator – How Many Panels or Slats You Need

The Wall Panel Calculator calculates how many panels you need to cover a wall. For sheet panels it divides the net wall area by one panel’s area and adds waste; for full-height strips or slats it divides the wall width by the width of each strip plus any gap.

Use it for paneling sheets, PVC or MDF wall panels, acoustic slat panels, shiplap-style strips or decorative boards. Enter your wall size and the panel size from the product listing.

Wall Panel Calculator

How many wall panels, paneling sheets or slat panels you need for a wall, including openings and waste.

%

Formula

Sheet panels:

Panels = (L × H − openings) ÷ (panel width × panel height) × (1 + waste %)

Full-height strips or slats:

Strips = (W + gap) ÷ (strip width + gap), rounded up

Where L and H = wall length and height, W = width of the area to cover.

How the Calculation Works

Step 1: Find the net wall area (or, for strips, the width to cover).

Step 2: Divide by the coverage of one panel (area) or one strip plus its gap (width).

Step 3: Add waste for sheet panels and round up to whole panels.

Variables Explained

Input Meaning
Panel width × height Coverage size of one sheet panel
Openings Area of doors and windows not covered
Strip width (coverage) Visible width each strip covers once installed
Gap Space left between strips, if any

Example Calculation

Sheet panels

Given: wall 20 ft × 8 ft, 4 × 8 ft panels, 10% waste

Calculation: 160 ÷ 32 × 1.10 = 5.5

Result: 6 panels

Slat panels

Given: 12 ft wide wall, 12 in slat panels, no gap

Result: 144 ÷ 12 = 12 strips

Common Area Conversion Table

Unit Equivalent
4 × 8 ft panel 32 ft² ≈ 2.97 m²
1 m² 10.7639 ft²

Material Estimation Notes

For interlocking or tongue-and-groove panels, use the covered (installed) width, not the full board width. Adhesive, trim, corner pieces and fixings are separate items listed by the panel manufacturer.

Waste Factor Considerations

The right waste allowance depends on the panel size, pattern matching and the number of cuts around openings, outlets and corners. Patterned panels that must line up usually need more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many wall panels do I need?

Divide the wall area (minus openings) by the area of one panel and add waste.

How many 4 × 8 panels do I need for a 12 × 8 wall?

96 ft² ÷ 32 = 3 panels before waste.

How do I calculate slat wall panels?

Divide the wall width by each panel’s coverage width (plus the gap, if you leave one).

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Yes for large openings; small cut-outs usually produce waste anyway.

Does this work for PVC or acoustic panels?

Yes — enter the panel’s actual coverage size.
