The Suspended Ceiling Calculator is a metric estimator for suspended ceilings: enter the room length and width in metres and it counts ceiling tiles, main tees, 1200 mm and 600 mm cross tees, wall angle and hangers.
By default it uses 600 × 600 mm tiles with main tees at 1200 mm centres, 3.6 m main tees and 3 m wall angle. You can switch to 600 × 1200 mm tiles and change any spacing or length.
Suspended Ceiling Calculator
Metric suspended ceiling calculator: 600 × 600 mm tiles, main tees at 1200 mm centres, cross tees, wall angle and hangers.
Formula
Let M = main tee spacing, L = room length along the mains, W = room width.
- Rows of mains = ⌈W ÷ M⌉ − 1 (minimum 1); bays = rows + 1
- Tile edges along the length: n = ⌈L ÷ (M/2)⌉
- Tiles = ⌈n × bays × (2 if square tiles, else 1) × (1 + extra)⌉
- Main tees = rows × ⌈L ÷ main tee length⌉
- Long cross tees = (n − 1) × bays
- Short cross tees = n × bays (square-tile layouts only)
- Wall angle = ⌈perimeter ÷ wall angle length⌉
- Hanger wires = rows × (⌈L ÷ hanger spacing⌉ + 1)
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Main tees run the length of the room at the chosen spacing; the gaps between them (and the walls) are the bays.
Step 2: Long cross tees span between mains at every tile edge, creating openings the size of a rectangular tile.
Step 3: For square tiles, a short cross tee splits each opening in two.
Step 4: Wall angle goes around the perimeter, and hanger wires support each main at the spacing you enter.
Variables Explained
| Input | Default |
|---|---|
| Main tee spacing | 1.2 m |
| Main tee length | 3.6 m |
| Wall angle length | 3 m |
| Hanger spacing along mains | 1.2 m |
| Extra tiles | 5% |
Check these against the grid system you are buying, as lengths and hanger spacing vary.
Example Calculation
Given: 6 × 4.8 m room, 600 × 600 mm tiles, defaults above
- Rows of main tees = 4.8 ÷ 1.2 − 1 = 3; bays = 4
- Tile edges along the length = 6 ÷ 0.6 = 10
- Tiles = 10 × 4 × 2 × 1.05 = 84
- Main tees = 3 × ⌈6 ÷ 3.6⌉ = 6
- 1200 mm cross tees = 9 × 4 = 36; 600 mm cross tees = 40
- Wall angle = ⌈21.6 ÷ 3⌉ = 8 lengths
- Hangers = 3 × (5 + 1) = 18
- Ceiling area = 28.8 m²
Material Estimation Notes
- Area ÷ 0.36 m² gives the whole-tile equivalent (80 here); counting openings accounts for cut perimeter tiles.
- Plan the grid so perimeter tiles are balanced on opposite walls.
- Leave enough void above the grid to install tiles and any light fittings.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ceiling tiles per m²?
About 2.78 tiles of 600 × 600 mm per m² (1 ÷ 0.36), before cuts.
How far apart are main tees in a suspended ceiling?
1200 mm centres is common for 600 mm modules; follow your system’s specification.
How much wall angle do I need?
Room perimeter ÷ length of one piece, rounded up.
Can I use this for 2×2 ft ceilings?
Use the Drop Ceiling Calculator for imperial 2 × 2 and 2 × 4 ft grids.
What is a suspended ceiling?
A ceiling of lay-in tiles supported by a metal grid hung below the structural ceiling.
