To find how many shingle bundles a roof needs, multiply the roof’s footprint by its pitch multiplier to get true roof area, add your waste allowance, then divide by the coverage each bundle provides and round up to a whole bundle.

Bundles of shingles (or squares of any roofing material) needed for a roof, from footprint area, pitch and coverage per bundle.
Estimating Roofing Bundles and Squares Needed
This roofing material calculator figures out how many bundles of shingles — or squares of any roofing material sold by coverage area — a roof requires, based on the roof’s footprint, pitch, waste allowance, and the coverage each bundle provides. It’s built for ordering material, not pricing a job; use the roof replacement or shingle roof cost calculators for cost estimates.
This covers related searches such as how many bundles of shingles per square, roofing squares calculator, and shingle bundles needed for roof.
Ordering the right amount of roofing material the first time avoids both a mid-job supply run and paying to return unused bundles, so getting the waste allowance right for your specific roof shape matters more here than in a simple cost estimate. This calculator also reports the roofing squares figure, which is useful on its own when comparing supplier quotes priced per square.

How the Roofing Material Calculator Works
Bundles needed = ceiling[(Roof area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)) ÷ Coverage per bundle]
Where:
- Roof area = Footprint length × Footprint width × Pitch multiplier
- Waste% = your chosen allowance for cuts, hips, valleys and ridges
- Coverage per bundle = the square footage one bundle covers (standard 3-tab shingles cover about 33.3 ft² per bundle, 3 bundles per square)
Worked Example
A 40 ft × 30 ft footprint (1,200 ft²) with a 6:12 pitch (1.118 multiplier) gives a roof area of 1,341.6 ft². With a 10% waste allowance, that’s 1,475.76 ft² to cover. At 33.3 ft² per bundle: 1,475.76 ÷ 33.3 = 44.3, rounded up to 45 bundles (15 squares).

Frequently Asked Questions
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Standard 3-tab shingles typically come 3 bundles to a square (100 ft²), which is the default coverage this calculator assumes — adjust the coverage-per-bundle field if your shingle brand packages differently.
How much waste allowance should I use for shingles?
The right waste allowance depends on roof complexity — the number of hips, valleys, dormers and cut edges — so a simple gable roof typically needs less allowance than a roof with many angles. Adjust the waste percentage to match your roof’s layout.
Does this tell me the cost of the shingles?
No — this calculator estimates the quantity of bundles needed. For pricing, use the roof replacement cost or asphalt shingle roof cost calculators with your material’s price per square.
Why does the bundle count round up?
Shingles are sold in whole bundles, so the calculator always rounds up to ensure you order enough material to complete the job.
Does this work for materials other than asphalt shingles?
Yes — change the coverage-per-bundle field to match whatever roofing material you’re using, whether that’s a different shingle brand, wood shakes, or another product sold by area coverage per unit.
