Gable Area Calculator

To find the area of a gable end, multiply the base width by the ridge height, divide by two, and multiply by the number of gable ends on the building.

Gable Area Calculator

Triangular gable-end area for siding, painting or venting from base width and ridge height.

Estimating Triangular Gable-End Area

This gable area calculator finds the triangular area of a gable end — the wall section under a sloped roofline, from the eaves up to the ridge — which is useful for estimating siding, painting, or venting material for that section of the house. Most homes have two matching gable ends, but the number-of-gables field lets you calculate for a single gable, a pair, or more on a complex roofline.

This covers related searches such as how to calculate gable end area, gable wall square footage, and triangular gable siding area.

How the Gable Area Calculator Works

Gable area = (Base width × Ridge height ÷ 2) × Number of gable ends

This is simply the standard triangle area formula (½ × base × height) applied to each gable end, since a gable is a triangular shape.

Worked Example

A 30 ft wide gable with an 8 ft ridge height above the eaves, on both gable ends of the house: Area = (30 × 8 ÷ 2) × 2 = 120 × 2 = 240 ft².

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ridge height above eaves?

It’s the vertical distance from the eave line (where the gable wall meets the roof slope on either side) up to the peak of the roof at that gable — not the building’s total height from the ground.

How many gable ends does a typical house have?

A simple gable-roofed rectangular house typically has two gable ends, one at each end of the ridge — more complex rooflines with multiple gables (like an L-shaped house) will have additional gable ends to calculate separately or combine using the gable-count field.

Does this calculator account for window or door openings in the gable?

No — it calculates the full triangular gable area. Subtract any window or vent openings manually if you need a net area for material ordering.

Can I use this for a gambrel or hip roof?

This calculator assumes a simple triangular gable end — a gambrel or hip roof has a different gable-end shape, so measure and calculate those geometries separately.

What is gable area used for?

It’s commonly used to estimate siding, paint, or vent material needed for the gable-end wall section, since that area is priced and covered separately from the rest of the exterior walls in many project estimates.

How do I measure ridge height if I can’t access the roof?

Ridge height can sometimes be estimated from roof pitch and the gable’s base width using basic trigonometry, or measured from ground level with appropriate tools — a roofing contractor can also confirm this measurement during an inspection.

Is gable area the same as roof area?

No — gable area is the triangular wall section under the roofline, while roof area (calculated separately, accounting for pitch) is the sloped surface on top of the structure. They’re different surfaces priced for different materials.
