The Wall Sheathing Calculator calculates how many plywood or OSB sheets you need to sheath a set of walls by dividing the wall area by the sheet area and adding waste.
Enter the total wall length (the building perimeter for exterior walls), the wall height and the sheet size. You can subtract openings, or leave them at zero if you sheath over windows and doors and cut them out afterward — a common practice.
Wall Sheathing Calculator
Number of plywood or OSB sheathing sheets for exterior or interior walls, including gables.
Formula
Sheets = (L × H − openings) ÷ (sheet width × sheet length) × (1 + waste %), rounded up
Where L = total wall length (perimeter) and H = wall height.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Multiply the total wall length by the wall height.
Step 2: Subtract openings if you won’t sheath over them.
Step 3: Divide by the sheet area, add waste and round up.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Total wall length | Sum of all wall lengths, or the building perimeter |
| Wall height | Height to be sheathed |
| Sheet width × length | 4 × 8 ft is standard; 4 × 9 and 4 × 10 are also sold |
Example Calculation
Given: building perimeter 140 ft, walls 8 ft high, no openings subtracted, 4 × 8 sheets, 10% waste
Area: 140 × 8 = 1,120 ft²
Sheets: 1,120 ÷ 32 × 1.1 = 38.5
Result: 39 sheets
Adding gables
For gable ends, find each gable triangle’s area (½ × width × rise) with the Wall Area Calculator and add it to the wall area, or run the calculator separately for the gables.
Common Sheet Sizes
| Sheet | Area |
|---|---|
| 4 × 8 ft | 32 ft² |
| 4 × 9 ft | 36 ft² |
| 4 × 10 ft | 40 ft² |
| 1.2 × 2.4 m | 2.88 m² |
Material Estimation Notes
Sheathing thickness, panel rating and nailing schedule are set by your plans and local code, especially for walls that provide bracing. House wrap, tape and fasteners are separate.
Waste Factor Considerations
Rake walls, gables and many openings produce more offcuts. Sheathing over openings and cutting them out usually increases the sheet count slightly but speeds installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sheets of OSB do I need for my walls?
Wall area ÷ 32 ft² for 4 × 8 sheets, plus waste.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Only if you won’t sheath over them; many builders sheath through and cut out later.
Is OSB or plywood better for wall sheathing?
Both are widely used; your plans or code may specify a rated panel.
How do I estimate sheathing for a whole house?
Use the exterior perimeter as the total wall length, then add gables.
Can I use 4 × 9 sheets for 9 ft walls?
Yes — enter the sheet size you plan to buy.
