Wall Weight Calculator – Block, Concrete, Brick & Stone Walls

The Wall Weight Calculator calculates how much a wall weighs — in total and per square foot — for concrete block (CMU), solid concrete, brick or stone walls.

For a block wall it counts the blocks and multiplies by the weight of one block plus any grout fill. For a solid wall it multiplies the wall volume by the material density. Weight per square foot is useful for checking loads on floors, beams and footings.

Wall Calculators

Wall Weight Calculator

Weight of a CMU block wall, solid concrete, brick or stone wall — total and per square foot.

Normal-weight 8×8×16 hollow blocks are typically about 35–40 lb; lightweight blocks about 25–30 lb.
Fully grouted 8-in blocks add roughly 35 lb each; 0 if hollow.

Formula

Block wall: W = blocks × (block weight + fill weight per block), where blocks = L × H ÷ block face area

Solid wall: W = L × H × T × density

Weight per area: W ÷ (L × H)

Where L = length, H = height, T = thickness.

How the Calculation Works

Step 1: Count blocks from the wall face area, or find the wall volume for solid walls.

Step 2: Multiply by the weight per block (plus grout) or by the material density.

Step 3: Divide by the wall face area for weight per square foot (psf) or per m².

Variables Explained

Input Meaning
Weight per block From the block supplier; varies with size and whether it is normal- or lightweight
Grout fill per block 0 for hollow walls; add grout weight for grouted cores
Material (solid walls) Concrete, brick masonry, stone or timber frame

Example Calculation

Hollow CMU wall

Given: 20 × 6 ft wall, 8 × 16 blocks weighing 38 lb, no grout

Blocks: 120 ÷ 0.889 = 135

Result: 135 × 38 = 5,130 lb; 5,130 ÷ 120 = 42.75 psf

Solid concrete wall

Given: 20 × 8 ft, 8 in thick, concrete at 2,400 kg/m³ (≈ 150 lb/ft³)

Volume: 106.67 ft³

Result: ≈ 15,982 lb, about 100 psf

Material Density Reference

Material (as used in the calculator) Density
Concrete 2,400 kg/m³ ≈ 150 lb/ft³
Brick masonry 1,920 kg/m³ ≈ 120 lb/ft³
Stone 2,600 kg/m³ ≈ 162 lb/ft³
Timber frame + drywall (equivalent) ≈ 800 kg/m³

These are typical values; actual weights vary with the product, mix and moisture.

Engineering Assumptions

Results are self-weight only. Plaster, cladding, reinforcement and anything supported by the wall are extra. Use published or supplier values when the weight matters for structural design.

Units and Dimensions

Weights can be shown in lb, kg or tons; weight per area in psf or kPa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a cinder block wall weigh?

Number of blocks × weight per block, plus grout if filled.

How much does a concrete wall weigh per square foot?

About 12.5 lb per inch of thickness for 150 lb/ft³ concrete — an 8 in wall is about 100 psf.

How much does grout add to a block wall?

It depends on the block size and how many cores are filled; enter the fill weight per block.

Why do I need the weight of a wall?

To check what floors, beams and footings must carry, or for transport and lifting.

Does a brick wall weigh more than a block wall?

Per volume, solid brick is denser than hollow block; compare using the calculator with your wall sizes.
