What Does a Deck Joist Spacing Calculator Do?
A deck joist spacing calculator spreads joists evenly across a given width so that the gap between them never exceeds the maximum spacing you select. It answers two layout questions at once: how many joists are needed, and how far apart they actually end up once the width is divided into equal spaces.
From the width, spacing and joist length you enter, this calculator reports:
- Joists required: the total number of joists, including a joist at each end of the width
- Number of bays: the spaces between neighbouring joists
- Maximum spacing: the on-center limit you selected
- Actual spacing: the even on-center spacing produced by the layout
- Joist length: the length of each joist, as entered
- Total joist material: the combined linear length of all joists, with and without the waste allowance
How to Use the Deck Joist Spacing Calculator
- Choose a unit system. Select Imperial to enter feet and inches, or Metric to enter metres, with spacing in millimetres.
- Enter the deck width across the joists. This is the distance the joists are distributed over, measured perpendicular to the joists.
- Select the maximum joist spacing. Pick 12, 16 or 24 inches on center (300, 400 or 600 mm in metric), or choose Custom to type your own value, such as 19.2 inches.
- Enter the length of each joist. This is only used to estimate total linear joist material.
- Set a waste allowance if needed. Open the material waste allowance section and choose 0%, 5%, 10% or 15%, or type a custom percentage. The default is 10%.
- Select Calculate. The results panel shows the joist count, bays, spacing and material totals. Reset clears every input and returns the calculator to its defaults.
Deck Joist Spacing Formula
The calculator uses three formulas. The deck width and spacing must be in the same unit, so imperial widths are converted to inches and metric widths to millimetres first.
Number of Bays
Bays = CEILING(Deck Width ÷ Maximum Spacing)
CEILING rounds up to the next whole number. A result of 11.25 becomes 12, because using 11 bays would push the spacing above the maximum. When the width divides exactly, as with 192 ÷ 16 = 12, nothing is rounded.
Number of Joists
Joists = Bays + 1
A row of joists always has one more joist than it has gaps. The calculator uses a two-edge layout, placing a joist at both ends of the measured width, so the extra joist closes off the last bay.
Actual Joist Spacing
Actual Spacing = Deck Width ÷ Bays
Because the number of bays was rounded up, the actual spacing is always equal to or less than the maximum you chose. Every bay is the same size.
How Many Deck Joists Do You Need?
The joist count depends on only two inputs: the width being covered and the maximum spacing. The three examples below show a width that needs rounding, a wider spacing, and a metric width that divides exactly.
Example 1: 15-Foot Deck at 16 Inches OC
- Deck width = 15 × 12 = 180 inches
- Bays = CEILING(180 ÷ 16) = CEILING(11.25) = 12
- Joists = 12 + 1 = 13
- Actual spacing = 180 ÷ 12 = 15 inches
The deck needs 13 joists at 15 inches on center. The spacing is below the 16-inch maximum because 180 inches has been split into 12 equal bays.
Example 2: 10 ft 6 in Deck at 24 Inches OC
- Deck width = (10 × 12) + 6 = 126 inches
- Bays = CEILING(126 ÷ 24) = CEILING(5.25) = 6
- Joists = 6 + 1 = 7
- Actual spacing = 126 ÷ 6 = 21 inches
The result is 7 joists at 21 inches on center. The extra 6 inches of width forces a sixth bay, so the spacing drops well below 24 inches.
Example 3: 4.8 m Deck at 400 mm OC
- Deck width = 4.8 × 1000 = 4800 mm
- Bays = CEILING(4800 ÷ 400) = 12
- Joists = 12 + 1 = 13
- Actual spacing = 4800 ÷ 12 = 400 mm
Here the width divides exactly, so the actual spacing matches the maximum: 13 joists at 400 mm on center.

What Does “16 Inches OC” Mean?
OC stands for on center. A spacing of 16 inches OC means the distance from the centerline of one joist to the centerline of the next is 16 inches. It is not the clear gap between the faces of two joists, which is smaller by the thickness of one joist.
Why Actual Spacing Is Often Less Than the Maximum
Most deck widths do not divide evenly by 12, 16 or 24 inches. Rather than leaving one oversized gap at the end, the calculator adds a bay and spreads the width across every bay equally. That is why a 15-foot deck at a 16-inch maximum comes out at 15 inches on center. You can still lay joists out at exactly 16 inches and finish with a narrower final bay; the calculator simply shows the evenly distributed option.
Calculating Deck Joist Material
Once the joist count is known, the calculator estimates how much joist material the layout uses in total.
Total Joist Material
Total Joist Material = Number of Joists × Length of Each Joist
Using Example 1, with 13 joists that are each 12 feet long:
13 × 12 = 156 linear feet
This is the combined length of the joists themselves. It does not tell you how many boards to buy, because that depends on the stock lengths available and how the joists will be cut from them.
Adding a Waste Allowance
Material With Waste = Total Material × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
With the default 10% allowance, 156 linear feet becomes:
156 × 1.10 = 171.6 linear feet
The right allowance depends on your cutting plan, board lengths and the number of offcuts. The calculator lets you choose a preset or type your own percentage rather than assuming one figure fits every deck.

What the Joist Count Does Not Include
The calculator counts the evenly spaced joists across one width, including the joist at each edge. It does not add framing that depends on your particular design, such as:
- Doubled or extra joists where decking boards butt together or where a pattern needs additional support
- Blocking or bridging between joists
- Beams, ledgers and posts
- Framing around stairs, openings or changes in level
- Separate sections of a multi-level or L-shaped deck, which should each be calculated on their own
Whether the two edge joists act as rim joists depends on how your deck is framed. If you also need the deck surface area, for example to order decking boards, the irregular deck or patio area calculator handles shapes that are not simple rectangles.
Important Structural Considerations
The joist count is one part of deck framing. This calculator works out the quantity and distribution of joists from the dimensions and maximum spacing you enter. It does not decide whether a particular joist size, species, grade, span or spacing is structurally suitable for your deck.
Before building, check the decking manufacturer’s installation instructions, which often state a maximum joist spacing, along with the building requirements that apply where you live, joist span limits, the loads the deck must carry, and any project-specific engineering. Consult a structural professional or your local building official where the right framing specification is uncertain.

Joist Count Questions
Why does the calculator add one joist to the number of bays?
A row of joists always has one more joist than it has spaces. Twelve bays need 13 joists because a joist sits at both ends of the width as well as between every bay.
How many joists do I need for a 12-foot deck at 16 inches on center?
A 12-foot width is 144 inches. 144 ÷ 16 = 9 bays exactly, so the layout needs 9 + 1 = 10 joists at an actual spacing of 16 inches.
Does the joist count include the joists at both ends?
Yes. The count covers every joist in the layout, including the first and last joist at the edges of the width. Extra framing such as doubled joists or blocking is not included.
Why is my actual spacing smaller than the spacing I selected?
The width did not divide evenly by your maximum spacing, so the number of bays was rounded up and the width was shared equally between them. The actual spacing can never be larger than the maximum you selected.
Using the Calculator
Can I use a spacing other than 12, 16 or 24 inches?
Yes. Select Custom and enter any maximum spacing in inches, or in millimetres in metric mode. For example, 19.2 inches on a 16-foot width gives 10 bays and 11 joists at exactly 19.2 inches.
Does the calculator tell me what joist spacing my decking needs?
No. It lays out joists for whatever maximum spacing you enter. The spacing your decking needs comes from the decking manufacturer and the requirements for your project, which depend on the product, the board direction and the deck design.
How is the waste allowance applied?
The waste percentage is applied to the total linear joist material only. It does not change the joist count or the spacing. A custom percentage, if entered, is used instead of the dropdown value.
Can I mix feet and millimetres?
No. Each unit system has its own inputs. Imperial uses feet and inches for width and length and inches for spacing; metric uses metres for width and length and millimetres for spacing.
