Except most decks aren’t rectangles. They have a notch for the stairs. An angled corner off the back door. A lower level that steps down toward the yard. “Longest point times widest point” doesn’t measure your deck — it measures the smallest rectangle that could contain it, corners and all. That’s not the same shape, and it’s rarely the same size.

The Real Cost of a Rough Guess

Take an L-shaped deck. Main section 20 by 10 feet. A smaller extension, 8 by 6 feet.

Real area: 20\times10+8\times6=248 sq ft.

Longest-point method: 20\times16=320 sq ft — treating the whole bounding box as deck.

That’s 72 square feet of decking you don’t need. Almost 30% too much material, on boards that can run $8 to $15 each. Guess wrong on a deck this size and you’ve overspent by real money, not a rounding error.

Measure It in Pieces

The fix is simple. Split your deck into the shapes it’s actually made of. A straight run is a rectangle. A cut corner is a triangle. A second level is its own rectangle. Add them up.

Coverage per board row: 5.5+0.125=5.625 inches.

Rows needed: 10\times12\div5.625=22 rows (rounded up).

Total linear footage: 22\times20=440 ft — plus waste for cuts.

At 10% waste, that’s 484 feet. In 12-foot boards, that’s 41 boards. Not “about 400 square feet of composite” — an actual number you can hand to a lumber yard.

Patios Skip the Board Math — But Not the Waste

Pavers work differently. You’re not covering a span with continuous rows — you’re tiling a fixed-size unit across the whole area. Pavers needed is roughly your total area, divided by one paver’s area, rounded up, plus a waste allowance for cuts along edges and curves.

Pouring concrete instead? Skip the board and paver math entirely — just use the total area with a waste allowance, and hand that number to your contractor.

Always Buy a Little Extra
