The Male Body Shape Calculator identifies a man’s body type from shoulder, chest, waist and hip measurements. It classifies five shapes — inverted triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, triangle and oval — and shows the shoulder-to-waist ratio and waist-to-hip ratio.
Male Body Shape Calculator
Men’s body type from shoulder, chest, waist and hip measurements: inverted triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, triangle or oval.
The shoulder-to-waist ratio separates the V-shaped builds from straighter ones, while comparing the waist and hips with the chest identifies oval and triangle shapes. Results describe proportions for styling and clothing fit, not health or fitness.
Formula
Shoulder-to-waist ratio = S ÷ W
Waist-to-hip ratio = W ÷ H
Where S = shoulder circumference, W = waist, H = hips.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: If the waist is the largest measurement, the result is Oval.
Step 2: Otherwise, if hips are at least as large as the chest, the result is Triangle.
Step 3: Otherwise the shoulder-to-waist ratio decides between inverted triangle, trapezoid and rectangle.
How Male Body Types Are Classified
| Type | Rule | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Waist ≥ chest and waist ≥ hips | Midsection is the widest part |
| Triangle | Hips ≥ chest | Hips as wide as or wider than the chest |
| Inverted triangle | S ÷ W ≥ 1.45 | Broad shoulders tapering to a much narrower waist (V-shape) |
| Trapezoid | 1.25 ≤ S ÷ W < 1.45 | Shoulders moderately broader than the waist |
| Rectangle | S ÷ W < 1.25 | Shoulders, chest, waist and hips similar |
Example Calculation
Trapezoid
Given: shoulders 46 in, chest 40 in, waist 34 in, hips 38 in
Waist is not the largest and hips are smaller than chest; 46 ÷ 34 ≈ 1.35 → Trapezoid
Waist-to-hip ratio = 34 ÷ 38 ≈ 0.89
Inverted triangle
Given: shoulders 50 in, chest 44 in, waist 33 in, hips 38 in
50 ÷ 33 ≈ 1.52 → Inverted triangle
Oval
Given: shoulders 48 in, chest 42 in, waist 44 in, hips 42 in
Waist is the largest of chest, waist and hips → Oval
How to Measure
- Shoulders: around the widest part of the shoulders, arms relaxed.
- Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms.
- Waist: around the natural waist, relaxed.
- Hips: around the widest part of the hips and seat.
- Use a soft tape held level, snug but not tight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my male body type?
Enter your four measurements; the calculator applies the rules above.
What is a good shoulder-to-waist ratio?
There is no single ideal; the calculator uses 1.45 and above for an inverted triangle and 1.25–1.45 for a trapezoid.
What is the difference between inverted triangle and trapezoid?
Both have shoulders wider than the waist; the inverted triangle has a stronger taper.
How do I measure shoulder circumference?
Wrap the tape around both shoulders at their widest point, over the deltoids.
Is this the same as ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph?
No — those are somatotypes; this calculator classifies proportions.
