The Body Shape Calculator finds your body type from a few tape-measure readings. For women it uses bust, waist, high hip and hip measurements to identify hourglass, top or bottom hourglass, spoon, triangle (pear), inverted triangle or rectangle. For men it uses shoulders, chest, waist and hips to identify inverted triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, triangle or oval.
Body Shape Calculator
Find your body shape — hourglass, pear, apple/oval, rectangle, inverted triangle and more — from bust or chest, waist and hip measurements.
It also shows the waist-to-hip ratio and, for men, the shoulder-to-waist ratio. Body shape describes proportions only — it is a styling guide, not a measure of health or fitness.
Formula
Waist-to-hip ratio = waist ÷ hips
Shoulder-to-waist ratio = shoulders ÷ waist (men)
The shape itself comes from comparing the differences between measurements, as shown in the rule tables below.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Enter your measurements in inches or centimeters.
Step 2: The calculator compares bust, waist and hips (and high hip) for women, or shoulders, chest, waist and hips for men.
Step 3: The first rule that matches gives your shape.
Example Calculation
Women
Given: bust 36 in, waist 28 in, high hip 34 in, hips 38 in
Hips − bust = 2 in (under 3.6); hips − waist = 10 in (≥ 10) → Hourglass
Waist-to-hip ratio = 28 ÷ 38 ≈ 0.74
Men
Given: shoulders 46 in, chest 40 in, waist 34 in, hips 38 in
Shoulder-to-waist = 46 ÷ 34 ≈ 1.35 → Trapezoid
Waist-to-hip ratio = 34 ÷ 38 ≈ 0.89
How Female Body Shapes Are Classified
All differences are in inches (metric entries are converted). B = bust, W = waist, H = hips, HH = high hip. Rules are checked in this order:
| Shape | Rule |
|---|---|
| Hourglass | B − H ≤ 1 and H − B < 3.6, and B − W ≥ 9 or H − W ≥ 10 |
| Bottom hourglass | H − B from 3.6 to under 10, H − W ≥ 9, HH ÷ W < 1.193 |
| Top hourglass | B − H over 1 and under 10, B − W ≥ 9 |
| Spoon | H − B > 2, H − W ≥ 7, HH ÷ W ≥ 1.193 |
| Triangle (pear) | H − B ≥ 3.6 and H − W < 9 |
| Inverted triangle | B − H ≥ 3.6 and B − W < 9 |
| Rectangle | B and H within 3.6, B − W < 9 and H − W < 10 |
If none of the rules match, the result is “Between types” — the two closest shapes may both apply.
How Male Body Types Are Classified
S = shoulders, C = chest, W = waist, H = hips; ratio = S ÷ W. Rules are checked in this order:
| Type | Rule |
|---|---|
| Oval | Waist is the largest (W ≥ C and W ≥ H) |
| Triangle | Hips ≥ chest |
| Inverted triangle | Shoulder-to-waist ratio ≥ 1.45 |
| Trapezoid | Ratio from 1.25 to under 1.45 |
| Rectangle | Ratio under 1.25 |
How to Measure
- Use a soft tape measure held level, snug but not tight, over light clothing.
- Bust or chest: around the fullest part.
- Waist: around the narrowest part of the torso.
- High hip: about 7 in (18 cm) below the waist.
- Hips: around the fullest part of the hips and seat.
- Shoulders (men): around the widest part of the shoulders.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my body shape?
Enter your measurements and the calculator compares them with standard shape rules.
What are the main female body shapes?
Hourglass, top hourglass, bottom hourglass, spoon, triangle (pear), inverted triangle and rectangle.
What are the male body types?
Inverted triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, triangle and oval.
What is the high hip measurement?
A measurement about 7 in (18 cm) below the natural waist, used to distinguish spoon and bottom hourglass shapes.
Is body shape the same as body type (somatotype)?
No — this calculator classifies proportions, not ectomorph/mesomorph/endomorph types.
Can my body shape change?
Measurements change over time, so your result can too.
