The Ceiling Cost Calculator estimates the cost of a new ceiling — false ceiling, POP (plaster of Paris), gypsum board or drywall — from the room size and your installed rate per square foot.
It adds a cornice or cove charged per running foot of perimeter and a fixed cost per light cut-out. Use your contractor’s rates: the default prices are examples only, and ceiling rates vary greatly by material, design and location.
Ceiling Cost Calculator (False / POP Ceiling)
Estimate the cost of a new ceiling — false ceiling, POP, gypsum or drywall — with cornice and lighting cut-outs.
Formula
Total = A × rate + P × cornice rate + lights × cost per cut-out
Where:
- A = length × width (ceiling area)
- P = 2 × (length + width) (perimeter)
- rate = materials + labor per ft²
How the Calculation Works
Step 1: Multiply the ceiling area by the installed rate.
Step 2: Multiply the perimeter by the cornice or cove rate (0 for none).
Step 3: Add the number of light cut-outs × their cost.
Variables Explained
| Input | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ceiling rate | Installed price per ft² for your chosen ceiling |
| Cornice / cove rate | Price per running foot along the walls |
| Light cut-outs | Number of downlight or fixture openings |
| Cost per light cut-out | Charge per opening (not the fixture itself unless you include it) |
Example Calculation
Given (example prices): 20 × 12 ft room, $8/ft², cornice $3/ft, 4 light cut-outs at $25
Ceiling = 240 × 8 = $1,920
Cornice = 64 ft × 3 = $192
Lights = 4 × 25 = $100
Total = $2,212
What Affects Ceiling Cost
- Material: POP, gypsum board, PVC, wood or metal.
- Design: plain flat ceilings cost less than multi-level, cove-lit or coffered designs.
- Ceiling height and access.
- Finishing: jointing, painting and cornice profiles.
- Electrical work for lights and fans.
For multi-level designs, run the calculator for each level and add the results, or ask your contractor for a combined rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is false ceiling cost calculated?
Ceiling area × rate per sq ft, plus cornice per running foot and extras like light cut-outs.
How do I calculate false ceiling area?
Room length × width for a flat ceiling; add the vertical faces of drops and bulkheads for multi-level designs.
Can I use square meters?
Yes — switch units and enter the rate per m².
What is POP ceiling?
A ceiling finished with plaster of Paris, often over a metal frame and mesh or boards.
Does the calculator include painting?
Only if it is included in the rate you enter.
