This calculator adds together the estimated time for each chore on your list, giving you a total in both minutes and hours for the full set of tasks.
Chores Time Calculator
Total time to complete a list of household chores, from each chore's estimated time.
What the Chores Time Calculator Covers
This calculator covers household chore time totals, cleaning schedule planning, and to-do list time estimation — adding up individual task times (dishes, laundry, vacuuming, and more) into one combined total so you know how much time a full chore list will actually take.
This is useful for planning a cleaning day, splitting chores fairly between household members based on total time rather than just task count, or blocking out realistic time on a calendar for weekend housework.
How Total Chore Time Is Calculated
Formula
Total Time (minutes) = Chore 1 + Chore 2 + Chore 3 + Chore 4 + Chore 5
Total Time (hours) = Total Time (minutes) ÷ 60
Where:
- Each chore field = the estimated time in minutes for that individual task (unused fields can be left at 0)
Worked Example
Dishes take 20 minutes, vacuuming 15 minutes, and laundry 30 minutes, with two chore slots left unused.
Total Time = 20 + 15 + 30 + 0 + 0 = 65 minutes
Total Time in Hours = 65 ÷ 60 ≈ 1.08 hours
That’s just over an hour to complete this particular set of three chores.
Splitting Chores Fairly by Time, Not Just Count
Dividing a chore list purely by number of tasks can feel unfair if some chores take much longer than others. Calculating total minutes per person, rather than just counting tasks assigned, gives a more accurate picture of whether a chore split is actually balanced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have more than 5 chores to total?
Group similar quick chores together into a single combined time entry, or run the calculation in stages, carrying forward a subtotal as one of the entries in a second round.
How accurate are my chore time estimates likely to be?
Actual time varies by home size, mess level, and how thorough you’re being, so use your own realistic past experience with each task rather than a generic guess for the most accurate total.
Can I use this to plan a weekly chore schedule?
Yes — calculate the total time for chores done on each day separately, then use those daily totals to spread tasks evenly across the week based on your available time each day.
Should I include travel time between rooms in each chore’s estimate?
For the most accurate total, factor brief transition time into each chore’s individual estimate rather than adding it as a separate line item, since this calculator doesn’t add transition time automatically.
How do I use this to compare chore splits between roommates?
Calculate each roommate’s assigned chores as a separate total, then compare the two totals directly — a fair split doesn’t necessarily mean an equal number of chores, but comparable total time.
Can I use this to estimate time for a deep clean versus a quick tidy?
Yes — simply enter higher per-chore time estimates for a deep clean and lower ones for a quick tidy, since the calculator just totals whatever individual times you provide for each task.
