This calculator counts the number of days between a sobriety or recovery start date and today’s date (or any date you choose), then converts that day count into years for an easy-to-share milestone figure.
Clean Time Calculator
Time in recovery ("clean time") from a sobriety start date to today, shown in days, months, and years.
What the Clean Time Calculator Covers
“Clean time” or “sober time” is the length of time someone has maintained recovery, counted from a specific sobriety date. This calculator covers clean time tracking, sobriety anniversary calculations, and recovery milestone counting in both days and years — a simple date calculation many recovery programs and support communities use to mark and celebrate progress.
Every milestone counts. This tool performs a straightforward date calculation, not a substitute for the support of a sponsor, counselor, or recovery program — it’s meant to help track and celebrate time, not to stand in for the guidance those relationships provide.
How Clean Time Is Calculated
Formula
Days Clean = As-Of Date − Sobriety Start Date
Years Clean = Days Clean ÷ 365.25
Where:
- Sobriety Start Date = the date recovery began
- As-Of Date = today’s date, or any date you want to calculate clean time as of
- 365.25 = the average length of a year in days, which accounts for leap years over multi-year spans
Worked Example
A sobriety start date of March 10 two years and some months ago, calculated as of today, might return a result like:
Days Clean = 850 days
Years Clean = 850 ÷ 365.25 ≈ 2.33 years
That means just over two years and four months of continuous clean time as of the chosen date.
Why the Day Count Matters as Much as the Year Count
Many recovery communities count and celebrate specific day milestones (30, 60, 90 days, one year, and beyond) rather than only annual anniversaries, so having both the exact day count and the year-equivalent figure lets you mark whichever milestone is meaningful to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator store or share my sobriety date?
No — it simply performs the date subtraction in your browser using the dates you enter each time you use it.
Can I calculate clean time as of a future date, like an upcoming anniversary?
Yes — enter the future date you want to check as the “as-of” date to see how many days and years clean you’ll have reached by then.
Why does the years figure use 365.25 instead of 365?
Using 365.25 accounts for leap years, so the years-clean figure stays accurate over longer multi-year spans rather than gradually drifting off from the true anniversary date.
What if my clean time was interrupted and restarted?
Enter your most recent sobriety start date — the one your current count restarts from — rather than an earlier date, since this calculator measures continuous time from a single start date forward.
What day counts are commonly celebrated in recovery?
Many programs and communities mark 24 hours, 30, 60, and 90 days, six months, one year, and then annually after that, though the specific milestones celebrated can vary between programs and individuals.
