This calculator adds up to five time values together and divides by however many of those values you actually entered, giving the average.
Average Time Calculator
Average of up to five time values (e.g. race times or task durations), each entered in minutes.
What the Average Time Calculator Covers
This calculator covers average time calculations across up to five entries — useful for averaging race times across several attempts, task durations across repeated trials, or any set of comparable time measurements you want to summarize with a single average figure.
This works with time values entered in minutes, and lets you use anywhere from two to five values by leaving unused fields at zero and adjusting the count of values entered accordingly.
How the Average Is Calculated
Formula
Average Time = (Time 1 + Time 2 + Time 3 + Time 4 + Time 5) ÷ Number of Values Entered
Where:
- Each time field = one individual time measurement, in minutes (unused fields left at 0)
- Number of Values Entered = how many of the time fields you actually filled in with real data
Worked Example
Three race times of 42, 45, and 40 minutes, with the remaining two fields left at 0 and “number of values” set to 3.
Average Time = (42 + 45 + 40 + 0 + 0) ÷ 3 = 127 ÷ 3 ≈ 42.33 minutes
The average of these three times comes out to about 42 minutes 20 seconds.
Why Setting the Correct Count Matters
The “number of values entered” field must match how many time fields you actually filled in with real data — if you enter 3 real times but leave the count at 5 (the default), the calculator would divide by 5 instead of 3, producing an incorrect, artificially low average.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I forget to update the “number of values” field?
The calculation will divide by the wrong count, skewing the average lower than it should be if unused zero-value fields get included in the count — always set this field to match exactly how many real values you entered.
Can I average more than 5 time values?
Not directly — for more than 5 values, calculate the average of your first 5, then combine that result with additional values using a weighted average, or total all values manually and divide by the full count.
Does this work for averaging times in hours instead of minutes?
Yes — enter your time values consistently in whichever unit you prefer (hours, minutes, or seconds); the average will be returned in that same unit, as long as all entered values use the same unit.
Can I use this to find an average pace instead of an average time?
This calculator averages raw time values directly. For pace (time per unit distance), first calculate each individual pace, then average those pace values using this calculator rather than averaging total times across different distances.
How do I average times that include hours, not just minutes?
Convert each time to total minutes first (multiply hours by 60 and add any remaining minutes) before entering them, so all values are on the same minutes-based scale before averaging.
